ABOUT

A team of dedicated volunteers who provide an emergency medical response service to our local community in the Peak District National Park

Established in 1999 in partnership with the Staffordshire Ambulance Service, and now operating under the auspices of the West Midlands Ambulance Service, we aim to ensure that people in our community receive emergency medical care as soon as is possible, and ideally within the national guidelines of 8 minutes. Our remote location makes this difficult without our help.
Our Team is a mix of people varying in age from 20s to 70s with widely differing backgrounds and skills, and united by the common goal of wanting to help their community. Our own steering group co-ordinates operations, and represents our interests at a regional level, along with other similar groups, at regular forum meetings with the Ambulance service (WMAS).

Operating on a rota system, the Responder(s) on duty have a direct radio link to the Ambulance service dispatchers (WMAS). When a 999 call is received in our area we are immediately contacted and the duty Responder(s) asked to attend the call to provide emergency medical care until the paramedic, ambulance or air ambulance arrives. Whatever we are doing at the time has to wait while we respond to the person needing help.

Calls can range from minor injuries to cardiac arrests, road accidents, heart attacks, fractures and anything in between. When we reach the patient, which isn’t always easy in our local terrain within the Staffordshire Moorlands, we can give appropriate treatment which may include oxygen, along with plenty of reassurance.
